Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?-Scriptures, Prayer, Declarations

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”-  Psalm 43:5

There are times in our lives when we share the sentiments of King David. We experience sadness and/or depression sometimes not knowing why our soul is in deep turmoil. Like King David, we can command our souls to hope in the Lord while looking forward to the time when we will praise our God once again.  This can be hard to do when are in the thickness of dark sadness and we may feel like we are far from the love of God. Thankfully, God has not left us alone to deal with the times when we cannot see our way out of depression. He has provided us with the Bible -a collection of books- that contains supernatural encounters with Him. From these books, we can draw comfort from real life experiences of servants of God who battled with depression.

Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38)

There are many people that suffer from depression that can identify with this type of sorrow- the type of sorrow that feels like dying inside.  Jesus was grieved to death over the circumstances that would surround his unjust death at the cross. Jesus, however, partnered with Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. Jesus asked them to intercede on his behalf in prayers as he himself also poured his heart out to the Father. Jesus made a choice to invite the presence of the Father in the midst of his sadness.(Matthew 26:38-39) During seasons of deep sadness, allowing others to pray for you and stay on the watch with you can turn periods of mourning into joy.  Reach out to our Father to get the healing that He wants you to have!  God doesn’t just want us healed He wants to make us whole. He wants us to have abundant life and depression and sorrowful days is not life in its’ abundance. (John 10:10)

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.- Ephesians 4:29

There is power in our words and the way we choose to think about a situation. (Proverbs 18:21)If we are looking to climb out of a pit of depression, we must begin with the way we think and speak. Speaking life into our circumstances by choosing to speak prophetically and positively puts us in the realm of joy that is promised to all who choose to make God their joy and strength. If we desire the grace from God to abound in our lives we should commit our thoughts to God and let Jesus take them captive to make them obedient to God. Let no corrupting “self-talk” come across in the way we speak or think but rather let us think on things and speak things that are lovely, chaste, praiseworthy and pure. (Philippians 4:8)

Prayer: Father, in heaven,  we beseech you and ask that you help your children to look at problems from the realm of eternity. Nothing escapes your notice and nothing catches you by surprise. Help us to heal from the passing moments of deep sadness and turn our mourning into joy. Fill us with your Holy Spirit so that it waters the seeds that you have planted in our hearts lest the Enemy of our salvation seeks it to snatch it away. Father, grant us faith that if we want to receive healing from depression that you are there to grant the desires of our heart this side of the cross and for eternity.

Declaration: We speak to our souls: Hope in God! Rise from being cast down! Let your lips speak in an overflow of the praises and honor due to our Savior and God. He will lift you up and cover you will the fullness of His grace by the mighty power of His Name. Speak his name into your heart and be revived to live life in the abundance of Christ Jesus!
