You who sit down in the High God’s presence,
spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow,
Say this: “God, you’re my refuge.
I trust in you and I’m safe!”- Psalms 91:1MSG
There are seasons in our lives where arrows fly by day, pestilence may pursue us or we may stumble in the worst way. The shadows of our own frailties often seem to threaten the light that illuminates our path. Shadows of lost dreams, unfulfilled hopes that are bound by a world that lays traps for the innocent. Yet, we serve a Mighty God who invites us to spend the night in His presence, to take comfort and take shelter in His shadow. We declare over our lives that we will abide in His love and trust in His mighty hand to deliver us from trouble.
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”- John 16:33 ESV
The high cost of leaving behind the ones you love to pursue the love of the Almighty is the price of discipleship.(Matthew 19:29) Jesus paid the ultimate price when he laid down His life so that we may have eternal life and life in abundance. (John 17:3, John 10:10) He knows that we experience tribulation that is why He left us with His words. We can find encouragement in that He has overcome many of the same plights we may be facing: loss of a loved one (John 11:11), securing secular work (Mark 6:3), homelessness (Luke 9:58) and/or bitter persecution from family and friends for faith in God.(John 7:5; John 10:31)
“If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says God,
“I’ll get you out of any trouble.
I’ll give you the best of care
if you’ll only get to know and trust me. – Psalm 91:14-15
Our Father pursues us with the deepest of love. He desires to care for us and to be with us. Knowing Him is communing with Him daily by taking in His words to feed our soul. Trusting Him is giving him all of our worries and troubles and placing them before His feet to leave it there for Him to handle. If we would set our affections and love toward God and hold on to His right hand, He promises to deliver us from our ills. One tangible way of resting in God is to meditate on His words, journal and pray through the night when feeling overwhelmed. As we put our trust in Him we will begin to have an intimate knowledge of His desire to keep us safe. Jesus calls us to abide in steadying peace in Him, not peace as the world gives it, but lasting and true peace.(John 14:7) Moving out of the shadows of our lives into the shadow of our God is not an easy transition. All and All we are moving toward resting our hearts in His care and to take hold of His peace. May we abide forever in the presence of our Father and His Son who cares for us in the midst of all that we face.
